Former Commissioner for the Environment, Lagos State and the
National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Muiz Banire,
yesterday, said that the rule of law would strictly be followed in the ongoing
Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) trial of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola
Saraki.
Banire
(SAN), disclosed this in an interview with newsmen after presenting two bills –
Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill and Whistleblower Bill, to the Speaker of Oyo
State House of Assembly, Mr. Michael Adeyemo.
The
bills, which were sponsored by the United Action for Change (UAC), sought
domestication of the FOI Act in Oyo State with regard to the challenges
identified in the operation of the Act as it exists at the federal level.
Banire
stated that the party would not influence the decision of CCT over Saraki or
any other person, adding that people should also know that Saraki was still
being presumed innocent until proven otherwise by a competent court.
He,
however, corroborated the position of people in some quarters that Saraki
should resign his position as the President of the Senate just like the
immediate past Prime Minister of Iceland, Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, did as
matter of morality.
The
former Prime Minister resigned after mounting protests and calls for his
resignation after leaked documents from a Panamanian law firm revealed his
links to an offshore company.
Speaking
in the bills, Banire disclosed that a federal legislation does not have a
nationwide application because it is in the residual list of the constitution,
not an item under the exclusive legislative liist or concurrent list.
